  • STEP 1 - READ ROLE TYPE EXPLANATION: Each position has a particular role type associated with it, each with different responsibilities and expectations. You will find all role type explanations at the bottom of this page. Please be sure to first read the role type explanation for the above position, to be sure you qualify.

  • STEP 2 - CONSIDER THIS FRIENDLY HINT: We always give priority consideration to those applications from current Break Diving members.

  • STEP 3 - SEND US A MESSAGE THROUGH VOLUNTEERMATCH: When ready, you can visit our organization page on VolunteerMatch and express interest in one of the opportunities posted. Take note to use proper punctuation, spaces, carriage returns, spelling, and capitalization—attention to detail is important, as it usually says a lot about the quality of someone's work.

  • We request that you provide the following information on VolunteerMatch when expressing interest in a vopportunity: (We suggest compiling your responses in a separate document before submitting so that you don't accidentally lose your progress halfway through.)

    • Please read everything on our corporate website, www.breakdiving.org; our community homepage, breakdiving.io; and the breakdiving.io/vopportunities page. Explain what the Break Diving community is, why you want to help us grow, and why you think you will fit in on our team. Be sure to refer to our corporate mission and to some of our current staff members by name to show us you actually did some research.

    • Explain why you believe you can handle working in a fast-paced environment with a million moving parts? Explain how you will manage your 'day job' and working here at Break Diving too without becoming overwhelmed.

    • Volunteering at Break Diving is intense. It's not an hour or two here and there. It's a long-term "volunteer to employment" position, extremely entrepreneurial, with high expectations, and a lengthy application process. Some of the key qualities we look for are: dependable; responsible; time juggler; enthusiastic; fun; loves to learn; loves to help others; likes speaking to others; can code, or desperately wants to learn; creative; entrepreneurial; big thinker; ambitious; good at time management; comfortable with computers; can multi-task; ready to partake in a part-time ongoing weekly training program; good team player; respectful of authority; respectful of other team members; has leadership ability or potential; ability to lead when necessary; friendly; capable of meeting regular weekly deadlines; capable of meeting weekly requirements; capable of regularly getting lots done; can juggle your normal live PLUS your second life here at Break Diving, and seamlessly integrate them both; independent; kind, good at communicating regularly and clearly, loves mentoring others, owns your mistakes, admits them, and fixes them; not afraid to admit your mistakes and learn from the mistakes; makes things happen; always learning; capable of working on a remote team; impeccably honest and trustworthy; hard working; independently productive; patient; disciplined; ability to see the big picture while also focusing on small details; happy to help others; believes 100% in our mission; wants to be a part of what Break Diving is doing over the long haul.

After reading the above, briefly explain why this excites you.

    • Everyone on our team helps everywhere. It doesn't matter if you primarily want to help with marketing, coding, finance, or operations--you will be wearing multiple hats. If you don't code, we will help train you to code before joining the team. If you code, you will also be helping with marketing and finance. Everyone chips in where necessary, because that's the team we are: we do what is necessary to get the company to the next level. Are you in? Ready to multitask and wear multiple hats?

    • Here is a brief bio about Break Diving Founder Monroe Mann: PhD in psychology, attorney, MBA in finance, Masters in entrepreneurship, LLM in commercial real estate, and 2022 BS in Computer Science. Bronze-star nominated Iraq veteran (Captain). 10-time published book author. Linguist (Chinese, French, Italian). Expat: China, Switzerland, France. Ruby on Rails web developer. YouTuber. Filmmaker & Actor (See: "You Can't Kill Stephen King" on Amazon Prime). And more. Bhavya and Ileana round out the leadership team with impressive SQL, Javascript, and CSS/HTML skills, leadership ability, and a very helpful feminine touch. We have a team of equally impressive individuals who together have helped us accomplish so much. Bottom line: we are a rockstar team of winners.

As a result, the application process can take anywhere from 4 - 12 weeks, depending on whether you have already been a member of our online community for some time. We only let people officially join the team who first 100% prove their love of our mission (by first being a member of our community) and then proving to us that they can succeed on our team (by evincing all the qualities of a good team member through accomplishment of our 16 pre-team volunteer tasks). In other words, volunteering with us is not a cliched "chance to give back"; it's a chance to dramatically improve the world, change its shape, and make it so much better. As a result, you can start volunteering with us from day one, but you are not invited onto the team until after you've proven you will help us move faster in fulfilling our mission (by completing the many required application tasks). It's not about you. It's about our mission and our members. Only those who understand that get to join our team.

And that's it! We will get back to you as soon as we read your message. If you don't hear from us within 48 hours, reach out again, either in the community, or via our email at [email protected].

WANT TO VOLUNTEER WITH US? FIRST ANSWER YES TO EACH OF THESE QUESTIONS:

    • Are you comfortable working in an online remote staff environment (Slack)?
    • Can you check in regularly in this environment (at least four days per week), working with people from around the world?
    • Do you have a high intermediate or higher level of English?
    • Can you multitask with ease, working on multiple projects at one time?
    • Are you capable of working on a team, hand-in-hand helping one another?
    • Are you ready to be a full contributing Task Volunteer (see description below) from day one?
    • Are you good at following directions, and at the same time, capable of innovation and trying something new?
    • Can you learn new technologies through self-study and practice?
    • Are you responsible, dependable, and capable of finishing tasks assigned to you?
    • Are you looking forward to working hard?
    • Are you humble enough to follow orders when given and to ask for help when needed?
    • Are you prepared to submit detailed weekly, monthly, and quarterly progress reports on your contributions to the company?
    • Are you prepared to submit detailed weekly, monthly, and quarterly progress reports on your ongoing and required coding study?
    • Are you prepared to join a monthly all-team meeting, and occasional smaller team meetings during the month as well?
    • Are you prepared to join us with no pre-determined exit date, i.e. you look forward to being a part of the company for the many foreseeable years into the future?
    • Are you doing this because you LOVE our mission, i.e. not just to gain experience to put on your resume?
    • Are you ready to join a team that is changing the world for the better?

Break Diving, Inc. is a unique company. We are a not-for-profit, but we run our operation like the entrepreneurial tech startup it is. We have assembled an amazing team that has become a well-oiled machine. We only bring on people who we believe will help us move even faster and more efficiently. In other words, we work best with people who are the opposite of lazy, the opposite of undependable, and the opposite of irresponsible. We are--we hope--looking for you! A TRUE BREAK DIVER!

True, some people are scared off by our professionalism and discipline. Others, like you, are inspired and driven by it. Volunteer work with us is not like you'd find at a traditional charity. Yes, it's part-time, and you make your own hours (more or less), but we all work hard. VERY hard. And we love it. Why? We each believe that we are a part of something that is starting to change the face of the planet, and therefore we are each willing to spend much of our precious free time developing something the world has never seen.

Do you have to give up your social life? No. Do you have to abandon your friends and family? No. Do you have to push your hobbies and dreams to the side? Absolutely not! But, do you have to really believe in our mission and be ready to join an amazing team of amazing people who actually do really important work? Yes, yes you must.

If you're up for it, and are ready to contribute, we'd love you to apply by reading the steps below.

TO BECOME A TASK VOLUNTEER, AND THUS START YOUR JOURNEY
AS A BREAK DIVING TEAM MEMBER, COMPLETE THIS 16-STEP CHECKLIST. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD A PDF COPY OF THIS CHECKLIST FOR YOUR REFERENCE.

    1. RESEARCH US: Please take the time to fully read our Diver's Code, Member Expectations, and Terms of Service as well, word for word. It's important that you understand and agree to help support and enforce the bedrock of what makes Break Diving what it is.

    2. JOIN THE COMMUNITY: Submit your successful application to become a Break Diving member and join the community.

    3. VOPPORTUNITY CHATROOM: Join the BD - Vopportunities chatroom and express your interest.

    4. 50 POINTS: Earn 50 points total, in all areas of the site.

    5. 15 OR GREATER: Keep your points at or above 15 on the 7-day leaderboard at all times, bare minimum.

    6. WELCOME TEAM: Be an active member for at least two weeks, and participate as part of the BD - Welcome Team. This means: welcome new members, help them, and be actively present in the community and chatrooms.

    7. CODING BASICS: Get started learning the basics of HTML, CSS, Javascript, Ruby, Rails, & SQL by getting started via the Break Diving dive handbooks.

    8. GITHUB: Visit github.com and setup an account there. Go through as many Git and GitHub tutorials that you can find on the site. Also visit our dive handbooks and find the one for Git/GitHub.

    9. FIRST DIVES: We require that volunteer applicants submit at least two coding dives, and one must be a backend dive (Rails, Ruby, Django, Java, Python, PHP, NodeJS, C, C++, or comparable). If you have no experience yet, no problem! Go to our handbook resources section, and pursue those dives, and submit another dive in the meantime. Ask questions in the community for help on your coding journey. The sooner you get started, the sooner you can volunteer with us. Note: some backend framework like Rails and Django also require a basic competency in sister languages, i.e. Ruby and Python.

    10. KNOWLEDGE CHALLENGE TESTS: Please visit the Volunteer Challenge Section on the .org site, and take the GENERAL test as well as the CODING test. Yes, answer ALL sections (Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced) to the best of your ability. You can use Google/Bing to find the answers. You are also welcome to take any of the other challenge tests if you are interested and want to showcase your knowledge and experience. This may take you a while, so get started as soon as you can.

    11. SITE ANALYSIS: Write up an informal marketing site analysis for breakdiving.io and post in the Vopportunities chatroom. It just needs to be a few paragraphs long, or a few key bullet points. You should share the areas where you feel we can improve, how we can recruit more members, and how we can reduce churn. Churn is the word to describe people who join a site, and then quickly disappear, never to be seen again. So share suggestions how we can avoid this. Finally, do not tell us we need to recode the site, or that we need to change the coding stack for the site. Neither are helpful, and do not make us want to work with you. We are proud of what we've done so far, and want those on the team who can contribute to making it better---not completely rebuilding it.

    12. LIVE EVENTS: You must first join two live events and participate for the entire hour.

    13. 5 RESOURCES: Create a new commentable Google Doc. Visit the resources section and find five additional resources to increase the usefulness of the handbooks. You MUST proofread them for proper English grammar. When done, on top right, click on the 'share' button. In the 'link' section, click on 'change'. Make sure the left side says, "Anyone with the link". If not, click on it to change it. The right side should say, "Commenter". Then click "Done". Share the link with a current staff member.

    14. NEW HANDBOOK: Create a new commentable Google Doc. Visit docs.google.com. Prepare an entirely new handbook by researching and collecting 15 resources for that dive, to include 5 beginner, 5 intermediate, and 5 advanced resources. Make sure to write out all of the other sections too, including learning paths. You MUST proofread it for proper English grammar. When done, on top right, click on the 'share' button. In the 'link' section, click on 'change'. Make sure the left side says, "Anyone with the link". If not, click on it to change it. The right side should say, "Commenter". Then click "Done". Share the link with a current staff member.

    15. VIDEO INTERVIEW: You must have working WiFi, audio, video, and microphone to work on our team. The final step prior to being offered a contract is to have a 1-hour to 1.5-hour interview with management/leadership.

    16. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: If after all of the above steps are completed, if we feel we need additional information from you to make a decision, we may make such a request.

If this looks too overwhelming for you, you can also help informally by joining the community and helping us out with any of the above in a more informal capacity from the Vopportunities chatroom! Make sure to tell us that you want to become a MEMBER VOLUNTEER and we can try to find some simple tasks for you to accomplish that will help us to more quickly reach our growth targets.
